CRITICAL LENS ESSAY
Our Critical Essay is taking what we know about our book and in my case my book was “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi and creating an essay on one of these Critical Lens: Critical Race Theory, Psychoanalysis, Postcolonialism, Queer Theory, Feminism, Reader Response. So even when reading Homegoing I had an idea of what I wanted my essay about and these lens put that into perspective. I related a litte more with the women in this book so to read their stories I Knew I had to write about it.
Documentary & Imaginative NonFiction
We were given an option to either create a documentary based on two interview where we get to know new people and find their lens and the experiences they grew on or to do imaginative nonfiction where they take those interview and create a story who those experiences. I chose documentary and I enjoyed asking questions and figuring out the lens that they saw through. All of us can live the same life but see it in a different light.
I was extremely excited to see I Am Not Your Negro, those ideas to me get me very heated and I would say I am very passionate about them.
In the drafting process it was very tedious but I learned a lot, through critique and figuring out what part of the interview I wanted to put on my documentary. It wasn’t easy finding each quote and writing everything they said down, depending on what we wanted our documentary to show. What helped was working with a partner and going with someone when doing the interviews, we bounced ideas and ultimately through the whole process I found it very helpful to have a partner. I can’t describe how good it feels to know your final product worked out. There was a lot of time put into the documentary so to see it at its final stage creates the idea that all that work was worth it.
